Selling your motorhome? Here’s what you need to consider

So, you’re thinking about selling your motorhome. Perhaps you’re looking to upgrade to a shiny new model, or your circumstances have changed and you need something smaller and more manageable. Whatever your reasons for selling, there are some important considerations you’ll need to take into account to make the process as easy as possible and ensure you get the best price.
Here at Simpsons, we’ve got years of experience buying and selling motorhomes, so we’ve put together a handy guide with tips and advice, from the best time to sell to preparing your vehicle for sale.

Is now a good time to sell my motorhome?

Spring is probably the best time of year to sell as we head towards the summer months when most people will be using their motorhomes. And because there’s more demand at this time of year, you’re more likely to sell for a higher price compared to winter and autumn.
It’s also a great time to be selling as more families are considering a staycation this year due to the ongoing pandemic and travel restrictions.

Where should I sell my motorhome?

There are a few different options when selling your motorhome, including doing it yourself, part exchanging or selling to a dealer. The quickest and most hassle-free way to sell is with motorhomes dealers or to part-exchange if you’re interested in upgrading to a new model.
While selling privately means you can set whatever price you like, remember you’ll have to deal with viewings, test drives and insurance cover yourself, as well as potential haggling and taking payment. It’s also worth bearing in mind that a motorhome trader will be able to sell your vehicle faster and may offer more money for it – plus you’ll have the added security of knowing you’re not getting ripped off or scammed.

At Simpsons, we’re always on the look-out for second hand, well maintained motorhomes to buy for cash or as a part-exchange trade-in.

How do I know what the value of my motorhome is?

Once you’ve decided how you want to sell, you’ll need to set a price. The good news is that of the motor industry as a whole, motorhomes and campervans tend to hold their value the best. However, the price of a motorhome will vary considerably depending on the make, condition, modifications and mileage, which is why it’s a good idea to go to an experienced valuer.

Our expert valuers can give you a fair valuation of your motorhome, whether you’re selling or part-exchanging. You’re in safe hands too, as we’ve got a reputation for offering the best part-exchange deals in East Anglia for those who are looking to upgrade.

motorhome sale preparation

Preparing your motorhome for sale

Now it’s time for some elbow grease. Before putting your vehicle up for sale, you’ll need to make sure that it’s in tip-top condition to attract potential buyers and achieve the best possible price. Here are some of our tips to help you prepare your vehicle for sale:

  • Thoroughly clean your motorhome inside and out and make sure all personal belongings are removed (this will help buyers imagine themselves using it)
  • Check that the fixtures and fittings are in working order, including any gas/ electrical appliances and plumbing
  • Make sure you have the relevant documents on hand, including an up-to-date MOT, official ownership certificates, handbook and service records and instruction manuals
  • Touch up any chips and make sure windows, doors and tyres are in good condition
Clearly lay out any accessories included in the sale (e.g., awning)

This could be especially useful if you are self-isolating or worried about visiting Simpsons in person. It’s also helpful if the tax has run out on your vehicle and you can’t drive it yourself.
